Christmas time, Mistletoe and Wine…
When it comes to cancer it’s often said that the treatment’s just as bad as the disease. This can certainly be true, chemotherapy and radiation treatments have their own vicious set of side effects which can leave a patient totally drained and violently unwell. This in itself isn’t much of an issue as suffering is a small price to pay for a cure from a potentially deadly disease, the issue comes when chemo or radiation fail and all you’ve done is harm a patient with no benefit. Researchers at the University of Adelaide think they’ve found a solution and it’s ever so festive.
Certain species of mistletoe have been shown to have cancer fighting properties in several studies. The plant extract is supposed to be effective against colon cancer which is the second most deadly of all the cancers and one of the most difficult to effectively treat.
The advantage of using mistletoe’s fraxini sub-species is that it’s much less damaging to the body. Rather than leaving you feeling racked by pain and intense fatigue, the new treatment’s supposed to be mildly discomforting and nothing more. It’s much more gentle on the healthy cells in the intestine.
Fraxini has a specialist protein which, when extracted properly is supposed to target and kill the cancer cells.
More testing is required before this treatment becomes used world wide but it’s already been authorized for use in Europe and it’s well on the way in the USA! The hope is that in the coming years more treatment options will be available to those unfortunate enough to be faced with colon cancer. This is great news for those who know how horrible chemotherapy can be and those who’d rather a milder treatment which is just as effective. This is a step in the right direction I’m sure you’ll agree!
