To help the Sunflower State celebrate its founding next year, Gov. Sam Brownback announced the “Happy Birthday, Kansas!” student photography contest.
“You guys can capture the moment,” he told a group of fourth graders at Jefferson North Elementary School. “Help us make a picture of what our history is in the state of Kansas as we’re going through it.”
The contest is open to Kansas students from first through 12th grades, explained Marearl Denning, a photographer and legislative spouse, who came up with the idea. They will have until October 31 to submit their entries. The winners will be announced on January 29, 2015, as part of the state’s 154th birthday celebration at the Kansas State Capitol.
The contest is jointly sponsored by the Kansas Historical Society.
