The announcement:

Canon Australia has announced a major partnership with Bingham Cup Sydney 2014, the biennial international gay rugby tournament. 2014 will be the first year Australia, and the southern hemisphere is hosting the Bingham Cup, which will be held from 24-31 August.

Canon’s sponsorship, arranged by Pink Media Group, comes as President of Bingham Cup Sydney 2014, Andrew Purchas, announces that Australia’s sporting leaders will set a world precedent by signing a commitment to eliminate homophobia in their sport. Australian Football League, Australia Rugby Union, National Rugby League, Football Federation Australia and Cricket Australia will all be contributing to efforts in the media and in their sporting communities to ensuring gay, lesbian and bisexual players, coaches, administrators and fans feel welcome.

Sponsoring the Bingham Cup signifies Canon’s support for the LGBT community and LGBT sports players, athletes and fans.

A spokesperson from Canon said, ““Canon is excited to be supporting an event that reflects our inclusive corporate culture and the diversity of the people that use our products. We also believe that the lens of a camera can do more than just capture the world; it can help change perspectives through powerful visual storytelling, and the Bingham Cup in Sydney will be a wonderful occasion for the lenses of Australia.”

Andrew Purchase, president of the Bingham Cup said, “We are thrilled to have Canon Australia on board as a Major Partner. With their support, we are aiming to not only share some unique views of what Sydney has to offer to our international visitors, but also capture and share some amazing memories of the Bingham Cup for all the participants and its supporters. Canon’s approach to create a unique experience where people could interact with the brand is something that really resonated with us.”
