How to Deal with Stress

Stress is natural to all of us.  It comes from our most natural instinct – the ‘fight or flight’ response.  However, nowadays we live safe, structured lives quite different to our primitive ancestors!  So, these adrenaline bursts don’t release themselves in fighting and fleeing; instead, we use all that excess mental energy to put pressure on ourselves.  How do we live with stress and maintain our wellbeing?

We all need exercise to release our natural build-up of stress.  Exercise, especially competitive sport, is a great outlet for aggressive energy.  Physical exercise also brings endorphins to the brain, giving us extra energy and a sense of wellbeing.  Solo exercise is great too.  You can use your exercise time as a way to connect with nature, taking a walk in the woods or a country cycle-ride.  We should make our exercise something we enjoy; otherwise we won’t keep doing it!

A good lifestyle is key to removing the bad effects of stress from your life.  This means a healthy diet that prioritises fresh fruit and vegetables.  Having enough sleep is a key factor as well – and it is important that you do this at regular hours.  Having a settled routine is really the frame to a healthy lifestyle.  Your body and mind are sensitive, so take care of them!

Take advantage of the many complementary health practices available, and choose one to be a permanent fixture in your life.  There may be a certain type of massage that works particularly well for you.  Or you might find that Yoga or Pilates becomes your favourite form of exercise.  Doing what you enjoy is the best way to wellness.  Health and wellbeing develop slowly and steadily and their effects should last forever.
