Buy or Rent? Medical Systems

Regardless of whether you’re recovering from a major surgery or you’ve come down with a condition which effects your mobility, at some point in you’re life you’re going to need various kinds of medical equipment to make things easier and your quality of your life better. The issue you may come face to face with is whether to buy or rent this equipment. Medical supplies are expensive and quite often it’ll be cheaper to rent them, the trick is knowing when…

Wheelchairs

Most of us will need a wheelchair at some point. You need to work out if you’re going to need it for a protracted period of time (over 6 months) and what kind of wheelchair you’re going to want. Automatic chairs are more expensive but will be easier on you if you’re enduring a long recovery, manual chairs are cheaper and will help maintain your level of fitness. If you’re going for a manual it might be better to buy unless you need it for a relatively tiny amount of time, they’re inexpensive and easily stored. Automatics are much more expensive and renting may be a more fiscally sound idea, unless you know for a fact you’ll need it for years.

Oxygen Systems

You need to know how long you’ll need this system for. If you’re going to be using it for the rest of your life then it’d be advisable to buy one. If it’s just there to facilitate your recovery and you won’t need it for long at all then it’d make more sense for you to rent one unless you expect to have to recover from the same thing again. Check what’s financially for sensible for you!

Patient Lifts

Patient lifts will make life for carers and patients better and easier by allowing easy transference between surfaces, the issue is that they’re very expensive. Luckily most medical supply companies allow you to rent these systems for a while to try them out first. We recommend doing this, seeing how useful they are to you and your way of life and then considering the costs and the pros and cons after that!

Remember that most of these issues won’t concern you too much if you’re a UK resident, things like manual wheelchairs will be claimable on the NHS. Keep your eyes open for medical health stores though, it might well be that you’ll find a better quality of aid in those!
