Longtime Winter Park Freestyle coach Dan Studer has been honored as the U.S. Freestyle Skiing Coach of the Year for 2014.

This award is voted on by all freestyle coaches across America.

Studer received this prestigious award at the 2014 USSA Spring Congress held in Park City, Utah, May 15-17.

Studer is the FIS Nor Am mogul coach and mogul course designer/builder for the Winter Park Freestyle Team. He has been involved with freestyle at various levels for longer than 16 years and always inspires excellence in coaching. Dan’s passion is coaching athletes at the highest levels, but he is always willing to work with developing younger athletes when back in Winter Park.

He qualified two mogul skiers to compete at this year’s Junior Worlds in 2014 Valmalenco, Italy, and coached one of them to an impressive fourth place in Dual Mogul Junior World Championships. Over the years, four athletes he has coached have advanced to the U.S. Freestyle Team.

This year, Winter Park qualified 14 mogul skiers for Junior Nationals and produced the Junior National men’s mogul champion under his coaching in Winter Park and sent 15 athletes to U.S. National Championships in Deer Valley. Studer is a fully-accredited level 200 mogul and aerial coach and supports coaches’ education program to younger Winter Park coaches.

Studer is one of the best mogul course builders in the country and always delivers an amazing U.S. Team Selections mogul course on Ambush trail at Winter Park. This season, he was brought in as technical advisor for the U.S. Freestyle Team to oversee the 2014 Lake Placid World Cup course build and event operation. This event was one of the last Olympic qualifiers before the Sochi Olympics.

Studer’s efforts are tireless, his love of freestyle skiing and dedication to the athletes is of the highest level. Studer is a quiet, humble coach always willing to assist other teams or athletes and truly exhibits sportsmanship to all.

These attributes, amongst his many other skills, all weighed heavily in Studer being voted the 2014 U.S. Freestyle Coach of the Year.
