One person was killed and five others were injured in a six-vehicle accident that blocked all lanes of Ga. 316 in Gwinnett County this afternoon.
The incident happened on Ga. 316 eastbound underneath the Lawrenceville Suwanee Road bridge around 3:20 p.m., Gwinnett County fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge said.
All lanes remained blocked in both directions into the evening, with an estimated clearance time of 8 p.m., the Georgia Department of Transportation said on its website. Drivers were urged to avoid the area.
When authorities arrived on the scene, there were two people trapped in one of the vehicles and they had to be extricated by firefighters, Rutledge said. One vehicle had flipped several times and came to rest upright.
Four people were transported to Gwinnett Medical Center, where one of them died, Lawrenceville police said. Two people had minor injuries and were treated at the scene.
Gwinnett police said the at-fault driver had a warrant out in DeKalb County for vehicular homicide in a separate case, Channel 2 Action News reported.
