Hydration and Healthy Skin

As organisms, we’re largely water. It’s something we’re made of and it’s something we require in great quantities to survive, not getting enough can lead to all sorts of health complaints and then death. One of these health complaints is dry skin which can correlate directly to the amount of water you drink each day.

It’s recommended that you drink around eight glasses of water every day as this will generally help keep you hydrated and feeling good. There are certain foods, specifically fruits and vegetables which have high water content and for this reason will help to contribute to your level of hydration. Adversely, foods which are high in salt will have the opposite effect. So that packet of ready salted crisps will actually dehydrate you as you’ll have to expend fluid reserves to digest it. So very simply, drinking more water could make you feel better.

Your skin is your largest organ and it has the highest surface area. It’s the body’s protection against the immediate environment and will often be the first part of the body to show any malady. In the same way, it’s your skin which will show your level of hydration. Hydrated skin should be elastic and smooth, dehydrated skin will be skin, flaky and feel tight.

If you’re worried that you’re not taking in enough water every day then perhaps you should consider transferring to a hydrated skin diet. This involves drinking eight glasses of water a day (coffee, tea and fizzy drinks do not count). Eat foods which have a high level of moisture, things like celery or bananas as well as cucumbers and melons. Lastly try and cut down to remove salty foods from your diet entirely, this should help to keep you much more hydrated and keep your skin beautiful and soft for years to come!
