Judge Not…

It’s easy to take a buzz word or phrase and run with it in the same way that it’s easy for us to believe what we’re told without initialising any scepticism or cynicism. For the most part, if we’ve accepted something as true without looking any further into it we’re happy with the information and perhaps a part of us wants it to be real. When we’re unhappy with it we’ll research and even make a fuss, depending of course on who we are. The issue here is that there are factors of life which we don’t like looking at and this leads to us accepting anything we’re told about them. This is true of mental health issues.

People are happy to believe whatever information the mass-media spews because it’s easier than actually looking at the issues and trials that the sufferers of these conditions have to deal with every day. A lot of negative and unpleasant stereotyping and misinformation in filtered through the press and negative impressions can be left with even the most caring of people.
For those who do suffer from a mental health condition or have family or loved ones who do, you’ll know how hurtful words which others say without thinking can be. Things like crazy or mad which have long since stopped being clinical terms in any sense, are thrown around by the media and mimicked by the public when describing the mentally ill. It can lead to a lot of negative discrimination and unpleasantness.

We need to stop simply accepting what we’re told and more importantly, the media need to start referring to those who suffer from mental conditions as people as opposed to crazy. These people are already dealing with issues and problems which will affect every aspect of their lives, they don’t need us to add to them.
