When you go for an ART massage what will the therapist do? This type of massage involves movement of the body, known as pin and stretch. The idea is to contract, massage and then extend the muscles to help release them from tensions and cramps. The therapist will gently move your limbs and perform cross-fibre massage. Sometimes you will be asked to rotate or move parts of your body to help the process.
It is quite common to experience pain with this type of massage; this might occur if your muscles are tense. If you do experience any pain, you should let your therapist know immediately. Don’t let this put you off though – strong massage techniques are worth the benefits. As with any complementary therapy, you should always make sure your therapist is registered with a relevant trade association.
Active Release Technique is quite a new therapy and well worth trying, whether you have a specific problem or are simply seeking general wellbeing and relaxation. It will be interesting to see how popular it becomes. Every new complementary therapy is a whole new world of wellness.
