Breast Cancer Myths: Part One

Breast cancer as a condition is very well known. There are very few people who’ve never heard of it and a good proportion of people have been affected by this form of cancer either directly or they’ve a family member or loved one who has. It’s widespread and like most things which are public knowledge, there’s a lot of myth and disinformation surrounding breast cancer. These false facts can be potentially dangerous or time wasting to ladies who’re trying to avoid contracting breast cancer and it’s for this reason that we’re going to talk about and then eliminate some of the biggest.

  1. A Bra’s under-wire can cause breast cancer – This is in no way true. It’s a myth which isn’t based on any study or data at all and is probably the result of Chinese whispers and people taking things far more seriously than they should. The thought was that the under-wire would lessen lymphatic drainage from the breast but again, this is entirely untrue.
  2. Antiperspirants can cause Breast Cancer – There’s no links between antiperspirant use and breast cancer likelihood. It’s been said that some of the ingredients used in older deodorant bottles may have increase oestrogen production or even been mildly carcinogenic themselves but there have been no definitive studies to say that this is in any way true. Doctors agree that there should be more research done into this area but in no way suggest limiting your use of antiperspirants.
  3. Radiation from X-Ray and other Screening Tests cause cancer – Technically yes, all radiation has the potential to cause cancer. But it’s reminded that mammograms (which are a type of X-Ray) use a very lose dose of radiation which shouldn’t prove harmful at all. Other scans like MRI’s and ultrasounds don’t use any radiation at all and are completely safe.
