A group of volunteer gardeners got together Tuesday (June 3) to beautify the Alpena Community College campus by planting thousands of flowers they’ve grown since seedlings.
The gardening enthusiasts are planting more than 6,000 geraniums, petunias, dusty millers and other flowers along Johnson Street and the main sidewalk across campus.
Gardener Ann Speaks said the group is able to fund the project by selling tomatoes at the local farmer’s market.
Henry Stibitz said the group planted the seeds at the end of January and began growing them under fluorescent lights in a room on ACC’s campus. Once the flowers are ready, the group transports them over to a greenhouse on campus where they continue growing the flowers until they’re ready to be planted.
The gardeners will finish planting the flowers Thursday (June 5). Anyone interested in helping should meet in front of the Besser Technical Center at 8 a.m.
