West Manheim Township officials have approved a local amateur radio club’s request to be allowed to set up at the township’s park for a 24-hour group radio session from 2 p.m. June 28 until 2 p.m. June 29.
The event will be part of the American Radio Relay League’s annual test using amateur radio operators for emergency response transmissions, local coordinator Joe Lambert said.
“You try to make as many radio contacts as you can in 24 hours,” Lambert said.
There will a generator and temporary radio antennae — manned by a maximum of 12 people at one time — to be set up at the park’s pavilion, Lambert said, adding that the radio club has its own insurance.
Park board chairwoman Christine Gienski said that neighbors adjacent to the area to be used by the radio club have been informed and said they are OK with the proposed event.
