McCutchen Closes Out NCAA Championships

The 2014 Montana State Track and Field season came to a close on Friday evening following the conclusion of the NCAA Championships hosted by Oregon at Historic Hayward Field. Carley McCutchen, in her first NCAA appearance finished 20th in the heptathlon with 5,027 points.

 

After an 18th place the first day of competition, she accumulated 3,715 points and also notched two lifetime best performances along the way. Day two began with the long jump, catapulting herself to a distance of 15-06.75 (4.74m) and while not her strongest jump, she still continued to pursue and compete. The javelin marked the penultimate event of the heptathlon, where she came in 15th, uncorking a throw of 121-08 (37.09m). Going into the final event, the Buckley, Washington native sat in 19th place with 4,277 points.

 

In her last race of the year, McCutchen she clocked a time of 2:25.55, good enough for 17th place. After all was said and done, her 5,027 total points over seven events gave her a 20th in the nation finish, the best ranking of her outdoor career.

 

“Not just speaking for Carley’s performance but for the entire group, we have so much to be proud of,” said head coach Dale Kennedy. “We represented ourselves well in Eugene and continued to gain more experience and most importantly, we competed.”

 

Jeff Mohl and Grant Grosvenor also competed at the NCAA Championships. Grosvenor ran the 800 on Wednesday, placing 20th, while Mohl completed the decathlon on Thursday earning his second All-America honors after placing 11th in the nation.
