Water Ventures Mobile Lab
Jean Taber asks Bright Lights, “Would you be willing to help us spread the word about the upcoming visit of the Water Ventures Mobile Lab at the Environmental Learning Center?” Yes, Jean, we can!
It’s a traveling science center made of a 53-foot semi-trailer that’s been customized to provide hands-on exhibits focusing on the how and why of water as it moves through our lives. Both indoor and outdoor Learning Lab stations cover topics ranging from Florida’s aquifers, watersheds and wetlands to the water cycle and water conservation, and much more. The mobile lab’s staff will be on hand to tailor the learning experience for all ages, from pre-schoolers to adults.
The dates of the lab’s visits at the ELC are June 12 from 12:30-1:30 p.m., June 14 from 11 a.m.-noon, June 17 from noon-2 p.m. and June 18 from noon-2 p.m. Admission is free for children 12 and under and for ELC members, and $5 for all others.

Add on five-pounds?
We touched on this last week and here is an important reminder: Keep Indian River Beautiful, Inc. (KIRB) is launching a challenge of Zero Waste to all residents of Indian River County. The I WANT TO BE RECYCLED challenge asks all of us to increase our household and workspace recycling by five-pounds each month to help reach the goal of 50-percent recycling by 2015. Music and Grand Harbor
Members of the Grand Harbor Community Outreach Program work hard to raise funds for the community. Their latest contribution was an $8,000 grant to the Salvation Army of Indian River County to help fund its After School Music Education Program, which provides music and arts education, instrument training and lessons from master’s level music director David May. This program is a free opportunity for children who reside in Indian River County to learn an instrument and become part of the Salvation Army Youth Band.
The Salvation Army started the Music Program in 2008 to fill a void in the community where children who normally wouldn’t have a chance to learn to play an instrument and learn about the arts of music. This program not only provides music education but also gives them character building skills for future life endeavors. To learn more, call (772) 978-0265.
Remember when?
Toni Falk of the Sebastian Elks invites us to round out the 4th of July weekend by coming out to the Lodge on July 5 for a “good ole summer rock and roll dance.” Toni says, “The EL-DOEs of the Lodge have arranged for the group ‘Remember When’ to perform that evening.
The dancing and memories start at 6 p.m. and go through 9 p.m. It is $7.50 per ticket to attend this rockin’ evening!” We are invited to bring our own snacks, but no drinks or coolers, because the lounge will be open. The Sebastian Elks lodge is located at 731 S. Fleming St in Sebastian. Call (772) 589-1516. The proceeds of this event, just like all of the charity events of the Sebastian Elks Lodge, will go to the many Elk’s charities such as the Children’s Therapy Services, the Youth Camp in Umatilla, local scholarships and to support several other youth activities.
