How to Prepare for your First Yoga Class

If you are planning to start a yoga practice, then the first thing to say is – congratulations! You are about to undertake an ancient practice that remains one of the best forms of exercise and complementary therapy in the world. Now, the important thing is to find a good teacher and peaceful environment in order to get maximum benefits from this total wellness solution.

Accessories – there’s a growing range of yoga equipment on the market, some of it useful, some superfluous! For example, fashionable, branded yoga outfits are entirely unnecessary and actually inhibit the real meaning of yoga, which is to focus on the inner, not the outer! As far as clothes go, choose loose, comfortable clothes that allow for flexibility. It is best if they are of natural fibres so that your skin can breathe. There may come a time when you want to purchase your own mat; in this case the same logic applies. Natural fibres like rubber provide perfect grip and breathability. Although most cheap yoga mats are plastic, this is something that traditional yogis will absolutely reject, as their manufacture is a highly toxic and wasteful process. Choose eco-friendly alternatives and your body will benefit as well as the environment. Then, there’s also the question of supportive blocks and straps. If you are not very flexible, these might be useful to you. Start by experimenting and discovering your exact needs before making the purchase, and remember that, in many cases, the expensive alternatives are unnecessary; a basic handkerchief or small towel can achieve exactly what a strap does!

Location – if you are starting in a yoga class you might meet with a mirrored wall behind the instructor. Many yoga students feel nervous and flustered about this, as it feels like you’re on display and everyone is watching your performance. In actual fact, everyone feels the same about this, so no one looks around at others. The true way to success at yoga is to keep your focus entirely on yourself; which is also the only way to keep your balance!

When you embark on your own personal practice of yoga, try some different locations to find out what works for you. You might find it important to do your practice under the sky; either in nature or on a rooftop. You could also try a private evening practice in your living-room, to the soundtrack of soft ambient music. Yoga is something you can take everywhere with you and you should always allow yourself to enjoy!

When beginning a yoga practice – do not worry! There is very little that you actually need. Of all requirements, the most important is a positive attitude and an open mind to the experience. With this, you can share in the wellbeing benefits that have been enjoyed for generations.
