KATHMANDU: Sabina Guja, Himal Lama, Suraj Pandit and Saurav Prasad Pradhan, Kshitiz Bhandari, Ashish Acharya, Ram Sharan Mahat, Suman Rai, Bikram Dhwoj Shrestha, Success Shrestha, Binita Kapali and Suryasan Prajapati made triumphant start in the second University Chess Championship here on Sunday. A total of 53 players of 26 colleges affiliated to five universities are participating in the four-day tournament. The winner of the tournament will represent Nepal in the 13th World University Chess Championship to be held in Poland in August. — HNS

 

U-18 national baske

KATHMANDU: Nepal Basketball Association (NeBA) is organising the The British College Cup seventh U-18 National Basketball Championships here from Tuesday. In all, 28 teams — 16 in boys’ and 12 in girls’ sections — are participating in the tournament, informed the organisers. Of the total estimated budget of Rs 1.2 million, The British College will provide Rs 500,000, while the NeBA will arrange the deficit amount. The tournament also serves as the selection for the qualifying round of the Asian Junior Basketball Championship to be held in Bangalore in July. — HNS

 

NIMS claim title

KATHMANDU: Niten Memorial School (NIMS) and Valley Public School claimed the titles of the seventh HIMS Inter-school Basketball Championships here on Sunday. In the boys’ section final, NIMS defeated hosts Himalayan International Model School (HIMS) 47-33 with Buddha Magar scoring 15 points, while Laxmi Chaudhary posted 12 points as Valley Public cruised past Innovative 24-10 to lift the girls’ section title. Aakash Nakarmi of NIMS and Laxmi of Valley Public were declared the MVPs. — HNS

 

Kunwar in Worlds

KATHMANDU: Yadav Kunwar is on Monday leaving for Russia to participate in the fifth World Para Taekwondo Championship to be held in Moscow from June 19-20. Kunwar, who had claimed the men’s U-68kg bronze medal along with the ‘Fighting Spirit’ award in the previous edition in Switzerland last year, will compete in the U-61kg this time around. Kunwar was feted with the para-athlete award under the Pulsar Sports Award by Nepal Sports Journalists Forum earlier this month. — HNS

 

Coca-Cola Cup

KATHMANDU: Chantal Moudi, Holy Vision, Modern Indian and Bal Gitanjali School won their respective matches of the Coca-Cola Cup Inter-school National Football Tournament here on Sunday. Chantal Moudi defeated Srijana Secondary School 2-0 on goals from Sagar Lama and Bikash Tamang, while Holy Vision edged New English 4-1 in tie-breaker after a 1-1 stalemate in the normal time. Utsav Rokka Sigdel scored a hat-trick as Modern Indian hammered Kumudini Kunja 5-1 and Bal Gitanjali crushed Basanta Ritu 2-0. — HNS

 

Scholarship chess

KATHMANDU: Scholarship Cup National Chess Tournament, organised by the Golden Gate Chess Club, began on Sunday. Bibek Thing, Mahesh Khadka, Prashant Gautam, Sabin Magar, Bikesh Jaiswal, Jenish Thapa, Milan Lama and Sreyash Poudel won their respective first round matches in the school boys’ section, while Puja Bhandari, Dikshya Dahal, Rakshya Raut, Suchita Rai, Arati Pandey, Simran Pradhan and Akriti Raut were triumphant in the girls’ section. — HNS
