How to Beat the Office Energy Slump

After working for some hours in office, employees feel drained and find themselves unable to concentrate on their work.  This is energy slump, which generally occurs in the afternoon. You may need to have some snacks and exercise to beat this energy slump.

Exercise

  • Take regular breaks, at least once an hour. Get up, move around and stretch your legs.
  • A few deep breaths and stretches will boost your circulation and help to wake you up.

Snacks

You can have fresh fruit, dried fruit or nuts, to have a long-lasting source of energy.    If you intend to have a chocolate, choose the ones which are less sugary.  A few squares of good-quality plain chocolate may be sufficient.

 

Desk stretches

Working on a computer constantly is tiring and aching.  You need to correct your posture at your desk to avoid injury.  The following steps may be useful:

  • Support your lower back to avoid back pain, by adjusting your chair.
  • Adjust your chair height.  You should be able to use the keyboard with your wrists and forearms straight and level with the floor.
  • Your feet should be flat to rest on the floor. Get a footrest, if you need.
  • Place your screen at eye level in front of you, neither too low nor too high
  • While typing, place your keyboard in front of you, leaving sufficient gap to rest wrists between the bouts of typing. 
  • Use the mouse with mouse mat and place it as close to you as possible.
  • Your screen should be as glare-free as possible.
  • You need to see the screen easily.  If you have to use spectacles, consult your optician.
  • Position frequently used objects, such as telephone, stapler, writing pad etc., within your easy reach.
  • If you have to use phone frequently, exchange your handset for a headset.

 

Drink water

When you feel hungry you also feel thirsty. Keep a filled bottle of water on your desk, which enable you to drink sufficient quantity.

 

Change work focus

May be, your work gets piled up and you lose enthusiasm in your work.   Take a short break and prioritise your “to do” list into small, manageable tasks.  Solve your tough task during first half of the day and leave the simple jobs for afternoon.
