THE Cheltenham Spa Ladies Under-10s have won a coveted place at the national futsal finals in Birmingham at the end of the month.

The girls fought their way through three tight matches at the South West Futsal Festival in Paignton on June 1 to secure their national spot.

But they started slowly.

At half time in their first match against Cornish Champions Charlestown Angels, the girls were down 2-1, but they powered back to win the match 3-2, thanks to goals from Freya Clark.

The second match saw them take on Exminster, with the Devon Champions beaten 3-0, thanks to goals from Katie Jones (2) and Clark.

The last game against Warminster Highbury was no less nail-biting, but at the final whistle the Cheltenham side came away with a 2-1 victory, the goal scorers being Libby Hyett-Uckun and Clark once again.

Team coach Nigel Riglar believed the girls had done “incredibly well” to get this far in their first year of futsal competition.

Cheltenham Spa Club Secretary Guy Stirling Lee urged the girls to stay focused for the national finals:

He said: “The team are a tight unit and have come on a long way since the start of the season.

“Now the important thing is for them to stay focused for the finals.”
