Since forming in 2009 to offer soccer as a high school sport to area students, Driftless United Futbol has been steadily increasing opportunities for people of all ages to play soccer.
Driftless United Futbol is a soccer program based in Viroqua, which is operated by Driftless United Athletics, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to bringing a diverse group of people together to enjoy each others company in the freedom and discipline of sport. From summer soccer camps for kids to open soccer for adults, and from youth indoor soccer teams to a competitive high school varsity team, Driftless United has lead the way onto the soccer field.
This summer is to be no exception. In addition to facilitating open soccer games every Tuesday and Thursday in Viroqua, Driftless United has now teamed up with the Viroqua Park and Recreation Department to enhance its soccer program. And for those who still want more there is a week-long soccer camp for fourth- to eighth-graders starting Monday, July 28.
“This camp is great for anyone who likes to play soccer, no matter their level of experience. It is designed, first and foremost, to foster a love of the game. Whether preparing for the fall season or just giving the sport a first try, kids will be challenged in a fun and encouraging environment,” said camp director Kelsey Sauber Olds.
Team play starts in August when the fall season begins. This year, Driftless United will be adding under 8 (first and second grade) and under 10 (third and fourth grade) programs to its lineup, which already includes U12, U14, high school junior varsity and high school varsity teams.
When the snow is on the ground the local soccer enthusiasts exchange their cleats for flat-soled shoes and hit the court for the futsal season. Remaining true to form, Driftless United offers the chance for anyone age 6 to adult to try this fast paced version of indoor soccer.
