I’d like some help with today’s pictures please.
They were discovered deep in the vaults of The News archives along with two yellowing cuttings – one from 1937, the other dated two years later.
There’s no clue about the sender.
As you can see, there is a theme which is largely women’s health and fitness and some men’s bodybuilding.
The 1937 cutting refers to a mass demonstration in the old Guildhall of 300 members of the Portsmouth Dancing to Health League.
It was the fifth consecutive year the event had been held and raised money for the lord mayor’s charities.
The lord mayor addressed the throng saying: ‘I’m sure these exercises are extremely beneficial to health.’
All the exercises were designed by a Miss Southwell Pearce while the accompanists for the evening were Mrs Beale and Miss Hughes.
Please get in touch should you know more.
