Minor-league hockey could be coming back to Macon.
Kevin Dowdell, the director of sales and marketing at the Centreplex, will speak to Macon-Bibb’s Commission Tuesday about the possibility of bringing back a minor-league hockey team.
He’s scheduled to speak to the commission in their 5 p.m. meeting.
Centreplex general manager Mark Butcher said the team would be named the Macon Mayhem.
He said they’re currently playing as the Augusta RiverHawks in the Southern Professional Hockey League. He said the team is looking to move because the Augusta area’s cooling system is corroded and can no longer make ice.
The commission, Mayor Robert Reichert and the Augusta team would all have to sign off on the deal, he said.
In the past, hockey has been a tough sell in Macon.
In 1973, a new minor-league team took on one of the most memorable names in sports — the Macon Whoopees — but folded in mid-season.
A different team took on the Macon Whoopee name in 1996 and lasted several years, but struggled with low attendance.
They were followed in 2002 by the Macon Trax. They played three seasons, in three different leagues.
