The new courts would be constructed right next to the entrance of Broadwood Leisure Centre, which neighbours Broadwood Stadium, in Ardgoil Drive, although the application remains to have a final decision made on whether it should be given the go ahead.
Received by North Lanarkshire Council on May 31st, the application has been set a target determination date of August 2nd.
The project would not increase the risk of flooding in the area, neither would it require trees to be torn down, nor the construction of new public access roads, or alterations to public footpaths, according to the planning application – which is dated and signed May 30th.
The submission of the planning application comes after Judy Murray – tennis champion, Andy Murray’s mother – visited Broadwood Leisure Centre in early May.
She welcomed the announcement by North Lanarkshire Leisure that three new courts would soon be built at the centre after the Active Places Fund, part of the Scottish Government’s Commonwealth Games Legacy 2014 programme, handed North Lanarkshire Leisure Ltd £75,000 to help cover some of the project costs.
Blane Dodds, chief executive of North Lanarkshire Leisure said: “The announcement of three new floodlit tennis courts is great news for Cumbernauld and surrounding areas.
“It marks another exciting development in our drive to make Broadwood a major sporting hub – a place which makes physical activity more accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
“The new courts will make a real difference to the local community and help provide a lasting legacy from Glasgow 2014.”
