Kyle Alexander has continued his brisk rise in the powerlifting ranks.
The recent Sierra High graduate had made the leap to an older age division and added three more state records to his resume. He competed in a meet at the Old Skool Iron Gym in Vacaville on June 8 and took first place in the 18-19-year-old, 220-pound division with a winning total of 1,361 pounds. Alexander was also second in the 23-25 open division.
His 502-pound squad narrowly eclipsed Jacky Sou’s state record of 501.55 set in February. He also broke Jordan Fite’s year-old deadlift (567 against 556.66) and total records while benching 292.
Alexander has a ways to go to reach Corey Bourgeois’ United States Powerlifting Association national records — 600.75 squat, 407.85 bench, 628.31 deadlift, 1,631.4 total — that were all set in 2013, but he’s come a long ways since competing in his first event in February, when he set new state and American records in the deadlift (562.17) and total (1,240.09) in the 16-17, 220-pound division.
Alexander has since picked up three sponsors in Cal Fit of Manteca, Fight Labs and Manteca Togo’s, which helps him pay for entry fees and supplements.
His next competition is the Boss of Bosses held at Boss Barbell Club in Mountain View on Aug. 2-3. Alexander plans on entering the USPA World Show in Las Vegas in November.
