IUDs recommended over the pill for teens

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends IUDs or hormonal implants instead of the pill for teens who are sexually active.

Long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) are recommended as a first-line contraception because of safety, efficacy and ease of use, AAP says. LARCs include hormone implants and IUDs, which can last years.

AAP, armed with a new study, says these methods are safe for teens.

Hormone implants are inserted into the upper arm and deliver hormones for up to three years instead of taking daily hormone pills or receiving regular injections.

An IUD is inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy and is effective for three, five or 10 years depending on the device.

The study says pediatricians should recommend teens also use condoms to prevent sexually transmitted infections.
