Walking Slowly Towards More Manageable Diabetes

We at Yourwellness talk a lot about the benefits of exercise in general. It’s something which you didn’t have to think about doing as a kid but, as you get older it can become much more of a chore. If you’re lucky enough to enjoy a sport or form of exercise then that’s great but for the rest of us it can be a challenge just accepting that we’re going for a run in the first place, never mind actually going for one! If you’re a diabetic the benefits are even more profound and this is why we’re going to start slow, we’re going to talk about walking as a form of diabetes controlling exercise.

When you start a new exercise regime it’s important not to overdo it and to work up to your goals nice and slowly. If you’re resistant to the idea, imagine how your poor body’s going to feel if you make it run a mile with no practise! There are some easy tips to the diabetic walking regime and by following them you’ll find yourself fit and healthy in no time.

–                     Make sure you have good, comfortable shoes. One of the many complications of diabetes is nerve damage and this can lead to loss of sensation in the extremities, including but not limited to the feet. Any damage you to them will be difficult to feel and as such could fester and become infected, this in itself is unpleasant but it can lead to amputation in the long run. So, comfy shoes that actually fit are important!

–                     Warm up! Be sure to perform warm ups before you get going. This will help to ease any strain you put on your muscles and prevent you from being terribly achy for the next few days.

–                     Build it up. Slowly do more and more to build up your endurance!
