Feng Shui is an ancient tradition, and works to improve wellness by removing old energies and bringing in the new. The energies in your home come from how you have interacted with objects, furniture and fabrics, and the emotions you have experienced while doing so. This means that you are anchored into your old ways unless you periodically clear them away.
If you need a quick way to clear the space, if you have unruly kids or animals in the house for example, open the windows, wash your hands, light sage or incense and walk through the house using a loud bell, drum, rattle or gong. Focus your attention on clearing away all old energies, and then do a prayer of intention for what you want to bring into your home and life for the New Year.
However, there are more thorough ways to clear space for the New Year. Start and end by showering, and make sure you wash your clothes at the end of the space clearing to get rid of any fabric-clinging energy. Give your home a good spring clean, opening the windows as much as possible (it might be a good idea to get rid of any animals, children, and invalids from the premises while you do this, as they will be more sensitive to the environment).
Next, for each room fill a bowl with water and nine flowers, or nine petals from one flower, floating in each bowl. Nine is the number of the Bagua map that is used in Feng Shui to chart the key energy centres in the home. Put each bowl in every room of your house, alongside a stick of lit incense and a small lit votive candle.
Next, get a space-clearing tool such as a loud bell, drum, rattle, gong, or bells and, standing at your front door, visualize roots from the bottom of your feet going deep into the earth, and pull this loamy brown earth energy up through your torso to feel the rooted grounded energy in your body. Then call on spiritual guides and say a prayer of protection and intention that all the past energies be completely removed and do not enter into anything and anyone on the way out.
Go round the house counter-clockwise, using your space-clearing tool up and down the wall of each room. Try to tune in to areas where the energy is more stuck, and perhaps go around them again, visualising the stuck energy releasing from the ceiling and walls and furniture and moving out the windows. Then go round again and smooth the energy by using softer bells, a smudge or rain stick, and end back at the front door.
