The most common risk factors for cancer are well-known, but can never be stated often enough to encourage us to take charge of our wellbeing.
Exposure to chemicals – the danger of asbestos poisoning has long been known and other industrial chemicals are also on the suspect list. If you work in the kind of industry that subjects you to such risks, then it’s important to do your research into what chemicals are harmful. It is equally important to ensure that you have union membership and legal backup if you do find that you’re being exposed to unnecessary risk in the workplace.
Environmental – those living in an urban environment are at risk from pollution and vehicle fumes. Toxic chemicals such as carbon monoxide, formaldehyde and benzene can have a devastating effect on health and are a prime cause of cancer.
Lifestyle – as always with lifestyle advice the key is: avoid the bad things and increase the good things. In the case of cancer the good things are fresh food – including fruits, vegetables and whole grains. There is little doubt that a vegetarian diet including omega-3 fish oils is best for all-round health and longevity. The damaging habits so symptomatic of our modern life should also be limited, or extinguished altogether. There are strong links between cancer and processed food, so be sure to try and minimise your consumption. Alcohol, tobacco and drugs also have a devastating effect on your wellness and are one of the most direct causes of cancer.
Genetics – some of us have a genetic predisposition to a certain form of cancer that we may be completely unaware of. This is why it’s so important to pass on your family history to your doctor. Knowledge of this may prompt them to invite you to early cancer screenings, which could very well save your life.
