Wales To Reduce Infections And Raise Sexual Health Services

The Welsh Assembly Government has revealed plans to improve the sexual health services for people in Wales and to reduce the number of unplanned pregnancies, rates of HIV and reduce sexually transmitted diseases. The Assembly Government’s prior strategy implemented a number of successful sexual health awareness campaigns, which have resulted in the downward trend of gonorrhoea diagnosis since 2004 to name just one.

There are plans to increase awareness of the importance of a proper education, so that people understand sexual health issues, as well as helping to improve the access for people to sexual health services. The Assembly Government also plans to reduce the number of unintended pregnancies, particularly in teenage girls, and to reduce the number of diagnoses for infections such as HIV and Hepatitis B.

The features of the plan involve creating a new National Sexual Health Advisory board and provide new guidance within schools for sex education, so that children and teenagers are properly educated on both the issues and their prevention. A campaign will be rolled out to also target the issues of binge drinking and unprotected sex. The Assembly Government will be looking to provide specific services and care pathways for people with HIV and AID’s as well.

The key role of these features is to educate people on the importance of prevention and cure, as well as raising awareness of sexual health conditions. The plan is to complement the campaigns and work already put in place by the board in previous years to help young people understand both the physical and emotional aspects of sexual relationships, so that the number of infections and conditions can be reduced. The board itself encourages people to have their say by responding to the consultation and to make use of the services provided.
