One of the main ways to manage diabetes is through proper diet. For the most part this is an exercise on managing your intake of carbohydrates and sugars. Generally diabetics will have to avoid things like sweets and fizzy drinks, anything with a large amount of sugar in it. Processed foods in general will have to be avoided too and this can be a big adjustment for a lot of type two diabetics. As with all things, it becomes second nature if you do it long enough and there are loads of diabetic food guides. I’ve written several for Yourwellness!
Fruit is a great source of natural sugar and though it’s chock full of other great nutrients and vitamins which would be beneficial for your body, it might be best to avoid it. Even though natural sugar is better for you than the general stuff, it will still push up your blood-sugar levels and endanger your health. Things like apples, oranges and pears are low in carbohydrates and as such could be handy if you’re trying to avoid them on a specific day. However, as a general rule, if you want fruit and you’re a diabetic then try and stick to berries. They’re low on the glycemic index and are great for you!
All things in moderation, more-so for diabetics. This doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a spot of fresh fruit, it just means you’re going to have to be more careful with it than most!
