Could A New Treatment Be The Answer For Psoriasis Sufferers?

Millions of people around the world suffer from psoriasis – an extremely unpleasant skin condition. This equates to over three percent of the world’s population. This uncomfortable and unsightly skin condition occurs when the body’s skin cells grow at a faster rate than they should. This leads to red patches or ‘plates’ on the skin, which are often raised up, flaky and itchy. As well as being very upsetting, these can also lead to other health concerns, such as infection, arthritis and depression and have a detrimental effect on peoples’ wellness.

Now, a Norwegian research company may be on the cusp of developing a new treatment which will turn things around, and provide relief for these millions of sufferers. This treatment comes in the form of a new ointment, with exciting new properties. When it is applied to the skin, it can be absorbed far more quickly and naturally than other ointments. It also contains a synthesised molecule, which is based on a type of fatty acid called docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) which could provide relief from psoriasis by inhibiting the serious inflammation that is associated with the skin disease.

Clinical trials of the new ointment look set to be underway soon, as a drugs company has taken on the testing of it early this year. This is likely to take a long time, but if these trials are a success, the results could rock the medical world, and the wellbeing of all psoriasis sufferers across the globe could be massively improved. A successful result could also lead to the technology being studied in further detail to look at how it could help with other types of chronic inflammation, such as that which occurs in nephritis (inflammation in the kidneys) and rheumatoid arthritis.
