This is a mental health problem that affects people’s emotions, making their mood change unexpectedly. It can also have an effect on their working relationships and on their personal relationships with those around them. If you have a personality disorder you may find that you have very low self-esteem and find it hard to control your emotions. You may self-harm. Women are much more likely to suffer from a borderline personality disorder than men, although that does not mean that men are immune to suffering from the disease.
The cause of borderline personality disorder is currently unknown, although there are some indicators that can point towards a likelihood of developing a personality disorder in the future. One group that is at risk are those who have suffered from some form of childhood abuse, abandonment or trauma.
Genetics could also play a part. You are much more likely to develop a personality disorder if an immediate relative is suffering from the same things. It could simply be that abnormalities in the brain and problems with the chemical processes in the brain cause the disorder. Serotonin, for example, is a hormone which causes feeling of happiness in human beings. If the balance of this is incorrect in the brain, it may lead to a decline in wellness.
If you believe you are suffering from a borderline personality disorder you may find that your emotions are quite extreme. You may be very sensitive and struggle with criticism, often due to low self-esteem. Some sufferers may even rely on drugs, alcohol or gambling to make themselves feel better.
There are various forms of treatment, including talking therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy and certain forms of medication.
