The way to manage type two diabetes is the same method used to prevent it. As the largest cause of the condition is being obese or overweight, doctors work with patients to help remove their excess weight and either prevent the disease from emerging in the first place or, to help manage blood-sugar levels.
In the USA, one of the countries worst affected by type two diabetes, it’s long been known that intensive one to one exercise regimes are very effective at preventing type two diabetes. In fact, in past studies it’s been shown that there’s a 50% reduction in cases of type two diabetes in those who take part in these exercise schemes than those who don’t. The issue is that, one to one is expensive and more and more people are contracting the condition each year. There simply aren’t the resources to give everyone this preventative treatment.
Researchers and health professionals are now working on a way of changing the treatment to keep its effectiveness but widen its perspective audience. By harnessing the power of the internet and relatively cheap to produce media, they’re hoping to create schemes which can be used in large groups and have the same effect on pre-diabetics. Studies are beginning this year and only time will tell just how effective this will be. It could be a huge step into curbing the spread of type two diabetes, should it be successful.
