In a lot of cases it doesn’t take much to upset what you may have thought was a good work environment. Unless you’re in charge yourself all it takes is your boss changing something or a new boss coming in and rubbing you the wrong way. There’s not masses you can do. If they’re in charge they’re in charge. The best solution is to come at whatever the issue may be with a cool head and not to let yourself get too stressed about it. Stress just makes situations much worse and can turn what is in actuality a tiny issue into a much larger one.
Talk calmly and if things get heated say something along the lines of, ‘I can see you’re stressed at the moment but I don’t appreciate being spoken to like this. I think it would be much more productive if we both take a minute to calm down and then try this again’. Then excuse yourself and take some deep breaths.
Most hostility in the work place will grow from miscommunication and stress is one of the largest factors in maintaining that breakdown in communication. The more worked up you get the less reasonable you’re going to sound and less well you’re going to be able to communicate your ideas. Any problem, no matter how large or ungainly, will be easier to deal with with a cool head.
