Dealing With Diabetes The Old Fashioned Way

Diabetes is an epidemic. Or rather, type two diabetes is an epidemic which rose to prominence on the back of the boom in the levels of obesity. In the USA today it’s said that around 26 million Americans have diabetes which is almost 8% of the population. ¾ type two diabetics are also obese, which gives you an idea of the correlation between these two conditions.

The thing with diabetes which causes so many people so many issues is the level of lifestyle changes which need to occur to maintain your health. It’s not a condition which can be treated by taking X amount of pills X amount of times a day and this can be difficult  for a lot of people. It’s not that they’re unwilling to make changes to maintain their own health, it’s that some people simply struggle to make and then stick to those changes. It’s like dieting and weight loss in general, some people lose the weight and then put it back on because they simply stop trying. Well, think of the diabetes lifestyle change to be a permanent diet where slipping could actually cause you some very serious medical complications and potentially death.

Though diet is a big part of the diabetes lifestyle exercise plays a key role too. Certain types of exercise do different things to your body, raising or lowering your levels of insulin resistance depending on what you’re doing. A lot of doctors recommend cardiovascular workouts as these are great at helping you lose weight and lowering your level of insulin resistance. However, it’s recently been shown that resistance training may be more beneficial and could actually help protect against diabetes in the first place.

The important thing to remember when it comes to exercise is that all exercise is good exercise. Walking when you could have driven, cycling, dancing round when you’re doing your chores and so many other things are great ways to ease yourself into a more active and healthier lifestyle!
