Vitamin B9
Also known as folic acid, this is a vital nutrient both during and after pregnancy. This helps the baby’s nervous system to develop properly, but also helps to stave off postnatal depression once your child is born.
Vitamin A
Hair loss is a common side effect of pregnancy, which can also lead to a further risk of post-partum depression. Vitamin A helps your body to develop strong, healthy hair and clearer skin after labour.
Vitamin C
Found in fruit and vegetables, in particular citrus fruits, vitamin C is great if you’re breastfeeding. It helps the body to develop immunity, as well as passing on this effect to your child so that they too can strengthen their immune system.
Vitamin D
Crucial for bone health, vitamin D helps the body to absorb calcium and phosphates. Pregnancy often results in a calcium deficiency, so vitamin D is great for ensuring that your body gets every bit of goodness that it can. Generally, this is created by the body through synthesising sunlight but you can also get it from certain foods and supplements.
Vitamin E
Vitamin E is used as an antioxidant to repair cells, remove toxins from the body and restore women to their full health again after birth. It helps to reduce fatigue, in addition to limiting the trauma of the labour. Speak to your GP about which supplements or nutrients you’re most in need of, and be sure to take good care of your body during this time in order to stave off illness or fatigue.
