How A Toxin Could Help An Asthmatic

Asthma is a tricky condition in that if you don’t keep an eye on it then you’ll find yourself in danger. If you do and you plan around it, you could still find yourself in that same danger but the chances are you’d be able to find your way out of it again without any damage. It’s a condition which is exacerbated by the environment around the sufferer, with allergens encountered directly triggering asthma attacks. These allergens can sometimes be avoided or worked around but even the most careful asthmatic patient with the most dogmatic approach to cleanliness is going to be caught out sooner or later. Providing they’ve got their emergency inhaler and they use it in a timely fashion, most asthma attacks can be nullified. Being caught without an inhaler and without someone there to help them could well be a death sentence however, so care is one of the most important factors in the treatment of asthma.

Asthma is incredibly common throughout the world today and it’s chronic so, most people who suffer from the condition are ever likely to get rid of it. For this reason a lot of time and effort is put into treating it. A study is about to be carried out in Australia to this effect. Botox which is a toxin taken from a certain species of mushroom and is commonly used to help smooth winkles generally in the brow, is about to be trialled on asthmatics for the first time. The idea is that the natural relaxant in botox will relax some of the muscles found in the voice box which should, theoretically allow the patient in question to breathe much more easily.

Botox has already been used to treat other conditions of the vocal chords and it has seen great success in doing so. Time will tell if the same can be said for the treatment of asthma but here’s to hoping we hear of progress in leaps and bounds very soon!
