The Truth About Fish Oil Supplements

Supplements are always accompanied by hype. This or that product is suddenly amazing for you, it gets a lot of media attention and products full of the stuff are lining the shelves. The thing with these products is that they’re very rarely all they’re cracked up to be. This doesn’t stop them from costing vast sums of money nor does it stop them from claiming every benefit under the sun. The substantiating evidence behind these claims is generally fairly thin; you can pull almost anything you want from certain sets of statistics after all. If some people show some benefits then companies will be happy to claim it’s great for everyone.

Omega-3 oils which are commonly sold as supplements made out of fish oil were once praised as being almost miraculous. A lot of new looks at old studies are now showing that in actuality the regular consumption of omega-3 oils could cause more problems than they solve. There’s mounting evidence which states that far from protecting you from heart disease or diabetes they may slowly increase your risk factor of contracting them! This goes against all of the media about fish oil supplements and has frightened a good number of people who’ve spent the last few years taking them!

Don’t let this put you off fish though. Fish still holds many benefits and omega-3 oil is still important to your body. It’s an excess which causes the damage and the danger. Our bodies are delicate things and we need certain amounts of certain things, any more or less is damaging to us. So eat all the fish you want and enjoy your diet but avoid supplements unless you’re actually told you’re deficient in a certain area and you absolutely need them.
