Give Up Smoking, Lose Weight For Your Wellbeing

A new survey suggests that more and more people in relationships want their partners to improve their health through losing weight and giving up smoking. 59 percent of the people surveyed said that they wanted their partner to lose some excess weight, with almost 80 percent saying that they wanted them to give up smoking or cut down in a bid to improving their health. Honesty, it seems, is the best policy as communicating and being upfront about their concerns seemed to be the most popular way to get them to change their lifestyle behaviour, according to the 58 percent who took this approach.

The British Heart Foundation states that there are nearly 2.3 million people living with heart disease in the UK, with lifestyle factors such as being overweight being the primary cause. Smokers are also top of the list, with a 60 percent higher risk of dying from heart disease than non-smokers. The survey showed that its not just minor lifestyle changes that people want to see in their partners – over 40 percent of those questioned said that they would want them to lose at least a stone to improve their health. Alcohol, though, was less of a concern – just 21 percent wanted their partner to cut down on the booze. Only 3 percent of people said they would reward their partner for the changes they made, with just 1 percent saying that they would threaten them to make changed. 1426 men and women were surveyed to promote Heart Matters.
