The Secret to Reducing Hot Flushes During the Menopause

Hot flushes are a normal side effect for women going through the menopause, but a new complementary health treatment could be the answer to reducing them and to restoring the feeling of wellbeing.

A Chinese herbal formula has been shown to reduce the number of hot flashes in menopausal woman by more than half, according to a new study that has emerged from Hong Kong.

The herbal mix is known as Er-xian decoction (EXD) and the study involved one group of women taking it, while another group of women unknowingly took a placebo, and then the effect on their wellness was assessed.

Hot flushes dropped by 62 percent in the group where the women were taking a concoction of EXD, whereas they dropped by around 52 percent in the group of women who were taking the placebo. This shows that it has some effect, but not necessarily a strong effect, as it does not totally diminish the occurrence of the unpleasant hot flushes, which happen due to the drop in oestrogen that occurs in the female body during the time of the menopause.

Herbal menopause remedies are not uncommon, but long-term studies are still needed to be done on this particular group of herbs to ensure that they are safe for women to take. Initial results do look promising and there is a chance that EXD could become a more mainstream form of treatment for the menopause.

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is still the most highly effective method of reducing the unpleasant symptoms associated with the menopause, but there are some concerns and health risks associated with it, hence more and more women are turning to alternative therapies to help them get through this stage of life without medication.
