Toothache Terror: How to Stop the Pain in its Tracks

A toothache can be debilitating and distracting, and aspirin and other pills might not do much to stop the pain. Fortunately, other options are available that do not require drugs. Here are a few ways to stop toothache pain in its tracks and feel better faster.

Rinse With Saltwater
A natural painkiller can be made by dissolving a teaspoon of salt into a single cup of boiling water. Allow the mixture to cool a little, then swish it around in your mouth for 30 to 45 seconds. This should stop the pain fast. Repeat as necessary. Avoid doing this with cold water since it could make the pain worse.

Use a Teabag
Tea contains many things that can relieve pain such as tannins. You will want to use either peppermint or black tea. Steep the teabag for just around 20 or 30 seconds in some boiling or hot water. Take the teabag out and place it against your tooth. The pain will slowly fade as the bag sits in your mouth.

Clove Oil
Clove oil is a natural pain reliever when used correctly, but cannot be simple poured on the tooth. Place two drop of pure clove oil on a cotton ball. Place the cotton ball against the source of the tooth pain. This should relieve the pain for 30 to 60 minutes. Chewing a whole clove and doing the same can work too, although it is not as powerful a remedy.

Cayenne and Ginger
Mix together finely chopped ginger and cayenne pepper in equal amounts to make a paste. Put a cotton ball into the paste and press it against the tooth that hurts. Be careful not get the paste on your lips or gums and remove the cotton ball once the pain has subsided.

Hydrogen Peroxide
A final option is to use some hydrogen peroxide in a solution. Take a mouthful of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide solution and swish it in your mouth. This can provide temporary pain relief. If you have a bad taste in your mouth along with pain, then you might have an infection. You will need to see a dentist as soon as possible in order to prevent the problem and pain from escalating.

Getting relief from the pain of a toothache can be incredibly satisfying since it allows you to get on with your day. It is important to note that these are all temporary solutions. If you have tooth pain for more than a few days, Valley Oak Dental Group Inc suggests seeing an emergency dentist.
