How Yoga Can Help With Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a very common problem today in women who are at a reproductive age. At least 5 to 10 per cent of the young women (as suggested by the National Institutes of Health research) are now diagnosed with the condition. But there is good news, as now many have started to acknowledge the role of yoga as a safe treatment option.

The science of yoga works at levels which are far more subtle and deeper than merely at the physical body level. It is well known that yoga helps release deeply stored stress in the system, which can help improve PCOS symptoms. Asanas (the name given for specific yoga postures) designed for PCOS can help to open up the pelvic area and promote relaxation and pranayamas (the name for the breathing exercises) are powerful techniques that should help to calm the mind. Coupled with these useful aspects there are some soothing meditations that allows you to feel more relaxed at a very deep level and help detoxify and de-stress the entire system.

The Butterfly Pose is one specifically that can be very helpful when trying to deal with PCOS. Don’t flap your legs too much; instead try to hold the posture for as long as possible. Even more helpful is the challengingly-named Supta Badhakonasana (or Reclining Butterfly Pose), which works just like the Butterfly Pose, but lying down instead.

This is what makes it extremely relaxing. To enhance the experience, be sure to play some light music and place cushions under your hip for ease and comfort. For beginners, it may be a good idea to use cushion support while doing this posture.
