Skin cancer is not always obvious. Because our bodies have all kinds of bumps, moles, warts, and even growths, it is easy to overlook the ones that are warning signs of cancer. Here are the hidden symptoms to watch for.
Changes Your Irises
You can get cancer in your eyes. This can be especially true if you don’t wear eye protection when you are in the sun. You may be used to thinking of skin cancer as on your flesh, but any part of your body that is exposed to the sun can develop cancer. Watch for new spots of color in your irises, or a change in colour of the iris itself. Also, watch for changes in the shape of the pupil.
Crusty Ears
You may be used to having ear wax or crusty areas around the ear canal, but you can detect cancer by paying attention to your ears. Any crusty patch that doesn’t go away after a month could be a sign of skin cancer developing. Also, watch for stubborn red areas or even moles.
Moles Hidden in Tattoos
People who have tattoos are likely to remove shirts or other coverings in sunlight. Showing off tattoos can actually lead to skin cancer. The worst part is, the tattoo may mask the cancerous appearance of moles. If you have tattoos, don’t assume they act like sunscreen. Have your skin checked where your tattoos are.
Sores in the Mouth or Nose
Melanoma can cause sores inside your mouth or nose. Harry Roth, a lawyer who deals in medical malpractice says these are called mucosal melanoma because they grow wherever mucus is present. If you notice sores in these areas that won’t heal, it is time to see a doctor.
Melanoma on the Scalp
We seldom get to see our scalp. We might get a glimpse at a beauty salon or barber, but other than that, we don’t think about the skin up there. Ask the person who does your hair to be on the lookout for suspicious moles or other spots. You could detect skin cancer early this way.
It’s a good idea to get a head-to-toe skin check every year. A qualified doctor could find skin cancer in its early stages, when it is easier to treat. Don’t rely on your own mirror for skin cancer screening. There are many hidden areas that need to be watched as well.
