Once you reach a certain age, shopping can present a new dilemma: what can I wear that’s appropriate? It’s not like you’re a teenager who can throw on any old thing and look flawless; you need to find the right wardrobe that will help you to look young – without looking like you’re trying to look young!
You’ve probably seen women around who dress like their teenage daughters, and it just doesn’t work. Likewise, you might know other women who are afraid to change their look, and so end up appearing dated and older than they are. The trick is to find a right balance so that your wardrobe is age-appropriate and stylish, but doesn’t make you look like you’re trying to hard. So how do you avoid looking like mutton dressed as lamb?
Firstly, even if you are lucky enough to have the body that can fit into junior clothes, it doesn’t mean that you should shop in that department. The styles have been specifically designed for teenagers – as have the prices. Fast fashion is the name of the game for teenagers, which means that, more often than not, manufacturers skimp on quality in order to churn out the latest trends quickly. Therefore, the quality won’t be what a woman who cares about her image should be seen wearing.
Another way to improve your anti-ageing wardrobe is to stay away from too much shine and sparkle. Yes, diamonds are a girl’s best friend; but you’re no longer a girl, and let’s not forget Marilyn Monroe was 26 when she sang that, and didn’t live much longer. When it comes to the bling thing, the rule of thumb is: if you would see it on a 13-year-old, you shouldn’t see it on you!
Finally, remember to focus on the fit of a garment, rather than the size. We’ve all had that amazing feeling when we’ve tried something on that looks great and – to our amazement and ecstasy – it’s a size smaller than we thought! However, squeezing yourself into a garment, just for the sake of saying you’re a size eight, is not worth the bother. If it’s too right, it will only make you look heavier and older. Be shape sexy instead – it will take years off you.
