Say YES to Finding Your Passion

Do you know what your passion is? You know, that thing that makes life worth living; the activity that makes hours fly by in what feels like minutes; that part of your week that excites, invigorates and inspires you. It is the thing you would do no matter where you live, no matter how much money you are making, no matter how good or bad life seems.

Wait, you don’t have something like that in your life? You’re not alone. Not everyone finds their passion(s) that easily. Some of us are lucky enough to discover our passion as children in dance classes, summer camp or even while inspecting bugs under microscopes, but there are plenty more of us who bounce halfheartedly from one hobby to another for decades before we latch on to something that really sticks.

Who wants to waste all that time? What’s the number one thing you can do to help you discover your passions—before you’re eighty? Say ‘yes.’ Yes sir-ee, it’s as simple as that. Just start saying ‘yes’ to all the opportunities life presents to you. Here are 3 ways to incorporate more ‘yes’ into your life to get started on your path towards a richer, more positive, more passionate existence:

Follow the threads of your whims. Say yes to everything that moderately intrigues you.Did you read an interesting article about how ancient cultures stored vast caverns of ice in the hot desert? Don’t just close the page and move on. Delve deeper. Look into ancient architecture. Learn about ice transportation in ancient times. Discover when people first started storing ice in uncooperative climates. Follow the breadcrumbs of your interest, and they’ll lead you in exciting directions you could never imagine. Remember, with the internet, you have no excuses. Information is easier to gather than ever. And if the trail goes cold and your interest in a subject dries up, no stress. Just pick up the next thread when it comes along. Not only will this technique help you discover a new hobby or passion, but it will definitely enrich your mind in a major way.

Get out of your comfort zone. I was recently invited to a party, but I was nervous about meeting new people so I almost didn’t go. But I did, and I met a whole new group of creative friends that do interesting, unfamiliar things that really intrigue me. All I had to do was say yes, and it opened up a whole new world of activities, people and ideas. The more people, ideas and activities you expose yourself to, the more likely it is you will begin to whittle down what really makes you tick. Of course, always listen to your intuition above anything else. If something makes you profoundly uncomfortable, don’t force it. Your body knows more than you do, so we should all listen more closely to our instincts. But, if it’s a friend inviting you to a brew-your-own-kombucha class or a family member asking you to help them learn how to edit video footage so they can cut together an epic YouTube video, say yes (even if you tend towards hermitude like me). In spite of those butterflies that hang over the exit sign of your Comfort Zone, you might be in for a truly expanding experience.

Get introspective and set your intention. Whether you want to call it meditating or just sitting quietly, being alone with yourself can open up a lot of pathways that may otherwise remain undiscovered. When you’re feeling stressed, nervous, anxious or empty, that’s your body screaming for some one-on-one time. Give it what it wants by finding a quiet corner, leaving your phone behind and getting personal with what is going on in your head. If you’re not a fan of meditation, journaling is a great way to get all your inner working out of your head so you can begin to try to make some sort of sense out of them.

You deserve to have a passion. There is something, as obscure as it may be, out there for all of us. Start saying ‘yes’ to life to get closer to finding yours.
