How to Go Travelling Once You’ve Reached a Certain Age

What’s the best anti-ageing tip for people of a certain age? Is it wrinkle creams? Green tea? No. If you want to stay young, the best way to do it is with new experiences. You may think that travelling should be reserved for 20-somethings on a gap year, but once you retire you have plenty of time and a whole world to see it in. However, though travel appeals to people of all ages, it differs for people of all ages as well. As an older traveller, there are five main safety precautions you should take to ensure the trip will be safe as well as enjoyable.

  1. Talk to your doctor in advance – Your physician may suggest a full check-up, before your trip begins. Plus, if you’re going to certain countries, you may have to take certain precautionary measures such as vaccines. Remember to ask your doctor when you should take medications, and adapt for the time zone you’re in.
  2. Pack your medications in your carry-on bag – Losing checked baggage is always a nightmare, but even more so if your wellbeing depends on certain medications that are lost in a suitcase somewhere. To avoid the stress of losing your medication, keep it with you in your carry-on bag.
  3. Make a list – Ask your physician to help you make a list that you can carry with you at all times. On your list, you should include any existing medical conditions you have; the name, dose and method of administration of your current treatment for those medical conditions; and the amount of the drug you need to take on the trip – just in case your medications get lost or damaged while travelling.
  4. Guard your wellness against deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) – You’re at risk of DVT when travelling because travelling often requires sitting in one place, such as on an airplane or train, for long periods of time. This reduces blood flow in your legs, which allows blood clots to form in your veins. Try to move your legs as much as possible when travelling, and invest in some compression stockings.
  5. Keep all medications in their original containers – You may have more space-efficient containers in which to store your pills, but keeping your prescription medications in their original packaging will make it so much easier going through customs.
