Being in a relationship is wonderful. It means you have someone to share your life, highs, lows, and goals with. But that is no reason to give up being who you are or lose yourself in the relationship. Here are a few ways you can maintain your independence while enjoying a relationship.
Have your own social life
Being married or dating someone doesn’t mean being joined at the hip. It also doesn’t mean that you have to merge your social circles and only do couple things. Have your own social life. Make plans for night outs with your friends or pursue hobbies of your interest on the weekend.
Maintain separate bank accounts
Money issues cause the most problem in relationships. A great way to address this is to have a joint account for your combined expenses. You could both pool in resources for it. At the same time, maintain a single account to deal with your personal expenses.
Travel solo
Make it a point to get some space every once in a while. This can be done by planning solo trips with the girl gang or going on a vacation on your own. Distance makes the heart grow fonder, and you grow as an individual as well.
Don’t neglect your career
Being in a relationship demands some amount of sacrifice, but it does not mean always putting your partner’s interests first. Focus on your own life. Do not ignore your career and always take pride in your work.
Stick to your plans
If you planned to accomplish certain goals, do not put them on the back burner just to make your partner feel more secure. Study, learn new languages or upgrade your skills. It might help in the long run.
Remain true to yourself
Never change who you are for anyone. Always remember that your SO fell in love with who you truly are. So, if you find your partner trying to alter your personality to suit his needs, it may be time to rethink the relationship.
