If you love art, you probably have dreams of jetting off to Paris or London to visit Europe’s most revered art museums. However, there’s plenty of fantastic art to be found closer to home as well. From world-renowned art museums and fine art displays to culturally significant street art and indie art galleries, the U.S. has plenty of options to consider.
Here are five of the top travel destinations for anyone interested in viewing art.
San Francisco
San Francisco has long been known for its artistic vibe, and as the city has grown in popularity, its arts scene has expanded even further. The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is a must-see, as are the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco and the de Young Museum. You can also, of course, find art galleries and artist studios all around the city. Head to the Mission District for street art, murals and modern fashions.
Santa Fe
Not to be forgotten among the bigger cities on our list, Santa Fe has a strong current of artistic tendencies. Native American art is on display at the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture and the Wheelwright Museum, while the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum features the world’s largest collection of the late New Mexico resident’s work.
Chicago
Chicago has an appeal all on its own, with one of the world’s top museums located here. The Art Institute of Chicago is known around the world for its huge collection of impressionist art, featuring works by Monet, Manet, Degas, Vermeer and other famous painters. The modern wing is home to more contemporary artists as well. For galleries and street art, head to hip neighborhoods like Logan Square or Wicker Park.
New York
Our list just wouldn’t be complete without the nation’s arts capital, New York City. New York is home to some 1,500 art galleries, and that’s not even counting its many museums and artistic neighborhoods. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is an obvious attraction, as are the MoMA and the Guggenheim. When it comes to galleries and street art, Brooklyn is home to New York’s most artistic neighborhoods, such as Williamsburg and Bushwick.
Asheville
Though Asheville is a smaller city, it boasts a huge number of artistic attractions. George Vanderbilt hired artists to deck his estate out in some of the world’s best art, establishing the city as an artistic hub. Head to the River Arts District to check out the many galleries and studios in the town, or check out the Folk Art Center or Asheville Art Museum.
