On the Prowl: How to Pick Your Perfect Wingwoman

When guys go out on the pull, they tend to hunt in packs. Chances are, a man will try to meet a woman with the help of his trusty wingman – but why don’t women do the same? A wingwoman can help you to pick out potentials, sound them out for you if you’re feeling a bit shy, and then give you the go ahead (and encouragement) when she finds a decent guy worth giving your number to. However, you have to find the perfect women to help you find the perfect man.

Firstly, she shouldn’t be single. According to Talia Goldstein, co-founder of the dating site ThreeDayRule.com, if your wingwoman is in a relationship, this will dissolve any hint of competition – which is essential to your self-confidence. While we’re discussing your mental wellbeing, make sure your wingwoman doesn’t look like Scarlett Johansson. You want guys to give your girl the time of day—but have their eyes on you. Goldstein adds that your coupled-up friend will also know what to look for in a guy. ‘She can easily identify the type of man who is supportive, kind, loyal—and who will adore you,’ Goldstein says.

While it’s important that your wingwoman knows you well enough to know what you want and need in a man, that doesn’t mean she should have known you since you were in nappies. The more essential factor is that she’s a natural extrovert. If you have a hard time approaching others, your wingwoman should know how to work a room, strike up a conversation with anyone and chat for as long as necessary to achieve her goals from the talk.

However, Nick Soman, CEO and founder of LikeBright, a social matchmaking app, warns that while your wingwoman needs to be fun and know how to charm men, she can’t outshine you. Instead, make sure she’s the kind of friend who will effortlessly shift the conversation back to you. Soman adds that your wingwoman should be able to help you detect if the guy is really interested, and then leave you two alone to get to know each other better when the time is right.
