Stay Fit While Travelling

By Jasmin Waldmann

It can sometimes be tough to stay in your fitness regime while travelling. Despite all your good intentions, it’s just not possible. The body experiences both mental and physical stress while travelling. Travel, especially air travel, costs the body lots of energy. One of the reasons for it is air pressure and the other is the act of sitting long hours.

To deal with this stress, the first priority is always recovery, not exercises and challenges for the body. Recovery includes physical and mental rest. The next very important aspect is your diet; it can either support you, or work against you. Eat the right foods. My JaWa Diet can be perfect even while travelling.

For you to stay physically healthy and fit you need the appropriate mindset. Let me give you an example. A client of mine, a businesswoman, arrives at the airport and needs to go straight to a conference to speak. She does not even go to her hotel room before the event. After that she has to talk to people individually. Then after 30 minutes she needs to go to the hotel, has 60 minutes to change, and then leave to attend a meeting.

So how can someone with such a hectic routine stay healthy and fit? I suggested this: After landing, when she gets into the car (the drive is 30 minutes), she should have hot water and listen to soothing classical music for 15 minutes, her eyes covered either with sunglasses or a sleeping mask. After 15 minutes she should think only of what she is going to talk about. There should be no going through the social media sites nor checking of emails or answering the cellphone.

Then, after the first event, when she goes to the hotel for a change of clothes, she should do treadmill for 20 minutes, meditate for 10 minutes and then get ready in 20 minutes. While going in the car for the meeting, she can prepare herself for it mentally.

In this example, what are the points that I touched upon? They are concentration, being selective, and focus. So stay focused, select what you really need to do and want to do, and do nothing else. Practice deep breathing, which will keep you stress-free and help you enjoy what you do.

Take care that your body moves, even when you cannot practice your entire fitness regime. Always look for options to get moving. Skip the elevator and take stairs. If you don’t have a gym at the place you’re staying, go outside and take a brisk walk, rent a bicycle, or swim. There is no reason to compromise on health and fitness even as you travel.
